This is the 3rd time this year I have ran across this issue. So I have decided to write a solution for it.
The common denominator continues to be… Computer designed and shipped with Windows Vista, trying to be upgraded to or do a fresh install of Windows 7 or 8 x64.
Normal Booting of device from Vista installed HDD works as expected, but once the USB drive or CD / DVD is inserted to boot from, you get the following error…
0. NO Emulation System Type: 00
1. NO Emulation System Type: 00Enter a choice:
I have found 2 solutions to this.
On a HP Pavilion dv7 all I had to do at the prompt was hit the “0” key, then you will get the “press any key to boot from ***”. On every reboot this bootable device in in the computer you will continue to get this prompt. If the Windows install has already started, make sure you hit “0” to continue at the error but do not “press any key to boot from ***”, if you do this will start the initial Windows install process again. Once Windows is installed and you remove the bootable media you will no longer receive the error.
The 2nd solution that I had mixed results with was to change the AHCI to Compatibility mode. But some older machines do not have this option, but this is something to try as well, if you continue to not achieve results.
It is worth noting that this error has not occurred on me when booting from a x86 “32bit”, Windows OS installs.
